Installing a heat pump in Canada costs $3,500 to $16,000 installed, and most homeowners pay around $8,000 for a ductless single-zone system. Every number here is the installed price before rebates: equipment, refrigerant lines, electrical hookup, labour, and the permit. One ductless head in a bungalow sits at the bottom of the range. A four-head system, or a central unit tied into existing ductwork, sits at the top. Rebates come off afterward, and in British Columbia they can move the final bill by five figures.

  • Refrigerant line set, wall coring, sealing, and lineset covers on exterior runs
  • Electrical hookup from the panel to the outdoor unit, including the disconnect at the unit
  • Condensate drainage off each indoor head
  • Seismic bracing on the outdoor unit where BC code calls for it
  • The electrical permit and inspection, plus a gas permit if an old gas appliance is being removed
  • Commissioning: vacuum, refrigerant charge to spec, airflow, and thermostat or controller setup

  • A panel or service upgrade if your electrical can't carry the load — the Technical Safety BC permit alone is $401–1,424, before the electrician's time

Get the model numbers of both the outdoor and indoor units in writing, along with the rated capacity at the cold-weather temperature the rebate program uses. Rebate eligibility is tied to specific listed models, so a quote that says nothing more than "3-ton heat pump" can quietly cost you thousands in rebate money.

These figures are before rebates. As of July 2026, CleanBC's income-qualified Energy Savings Program pays $1,000–$13,000 on heat pumps depending on household income, current heating fuel, and system type, with new tiers in force for invoices dated July 6, 2026 or later. BC Hydro pays $4,000 (whole home) or $1,500 (partial) in electrically heated homes. Both require a registered contractor, and CleanBC's stream requires approval before installation. FortisBC's dual-fuel rebate closed December 18, 2025.

What Moves the Price

Number of indoor heads
The biggest single lever on a ductless job. Each extra head brings its own line set, drilling, mounting, and commissioning time, and BC contractors price the steps at roughly $2,000–3,500 apiece. That's why a four-head system lands near triple a one-head system.
Ductless or ducted
A house with sound ductwork can take a central heat pump at $7,000–13,000 and heat every room off one indoor unit. No ducts means heads on walls, and the price then tracks how many rooms you actually want covered rather than the size of the house.
Electrical service
Where quotes diverge most. A dedicated circuit for the outdoor unit is routine, but a 100-amp panel in a 1970s house often has nothing left to give. The Technical Safety BC permit for service work runs $401 to $1,424 in 2026 depending on the panel, and the electrician's labour sits on top.
Cold-climate rating
A cold-climate unit holds its capacity down near −15 °C instead of falling back on resistance heat. On the coast a standard unit copes with almost every night of the year. In Kamloops, Prince George, or the Kootenays the cold-climate model is the one worth the premium.
Line-set run and mounting
Distance between the outdoor unit and each head drives refrigerant line, coring, and finishing work. A head on the far corner of the house, or an exterior run that needs a lineset cover down two storeys, adds a few hundred dollars per zone.
What comes out
Taking a gas furnace or boiler out as part of the job adds decommissioning work and a gas permit on top of the electrical side. Leaving the furnace in place as backup heat skips both and is how a lot of BC homes do it.

How the Job Actually Goes

  1. Heat-loss calculation and site visit

    The contractor measures the house, looks at insulation, windows, and orientation, and works out how much heat you actually need at design temperature. This is also when the panel cover comes off and your electrical capacity gets a real look rather than a guess.

  2. Rebate registration

    CleanBC's income-qualified stream has to approve you before any equipment goes in — install first and the rebate is gone, with no appeal. BC Hydro's runs the other way, applied for within six months of the invoice date.

  3. Electrical

    A dedicated circuit runs from the panel to the outdoor unit, with a disconnect at the unit itself. If the service is already at capacity, this is the step where a panel upgrade gets added and the quote changes.

  4. Mount the units and run the lines

    The outdoor unit goes on its pad or bracket, indoor heads get mounted and cored through the wall, and refrigerant line, condensate line, and control wiring get run between them. Most of the labour day lives here.

    Lines are pressure-tested and pulled down to vacuum, refrigerant is set to the manufacturer's spec, and the technician runs the system in both heating and cooling while checking superheat, subcooling, and airflow at each head.

Do It Yourself or Hire a Pro?

Doing it yourself

  • Pre-charged DIY mini-split kits exist and take the equipment cost down by a wide margin on a single-room install
  • The prep work is genuinely yours to do: levelling the pad location, clearing the wall, exterior painting once the lines are in
  • Refrigerant handling is certified work, and an uncertified install voids the manufacturer warranty on every major brand
  • Both CleanBC and BC Hydro require installation by a contractor in their approved network — a DIY install forfeits every rebate dollar, which is usually more than the labour you saved
  • Pulling the lines down to vacuum needs a micron gauge and a proper pump. A sloppy evacuation leaves moisture in the system and takes the compressor out over a couple of seasons
  • Sizing errors cost you both ways: oversized units short-cycle and never dehumidify, undersized ones lean on resistance heat all winter and wipe out the operating savings

Hiring a licensed pro

  • A licensed HVAC technician or refrigeration mechanic charges and commissions the system, which is what keeps the warranty alive
  • Registered contractors are the only route to CleanBC and BC Hydro money — on many BC homes that's worth more than the entire labour bill
  • A heat-loss calculation instead of a rule of thumb, so the system is sized to your house rather than its square footage
  • Permits pulled, electrical inspected, and paperwork that exists when you sell
  • Booking runs weeks out in spring and fall, and a heat wave clears the calendar entirely
  • You're paying for a trade in short supply, which keeps labour rates firm across the province

Our take: The rebate math settles this one. A registered contractor is a condition of every meaningful BC heat pump rebate, and on a gas-heated home the income-qualified CleanBC tier reaches $13,000 for a central ducted system. Installing it yourself to save labour, then losing the rebate, is the most expensive way to put a heat pump in a BC house.

Signs It's Time to Replace

  • Your furnace or your baseboards are near the end, so you're about to spend money on heating equipment either way
  • You have no cooling and the last few BC summers made that a problem — a heat pump is one box doing both jobs
  • You heat with oil or propane, where the CleanBC rebate reaches its highest tiers and the fuel savings are the largest in the province
  • You heat with electric baseboards, which is the one case where BC Hydro's $4,000 whole-home rebate applies
  • The house has usable ductwork sitting idle for eight months of the year
  • Honest catch: with cheap natural gas and a newer furnace, operating savings alone rarely pay for the swap. The case has to include cooling, rebates, or emissions to hold up.

How to Keep the Cost Down

  1. Check your income bracket before you check equipment. CleanBC's Energy Savings Program pays anywhere from $1,000 to $13,000 depending on household income, your current heating fuel, and system type — the identical install can cost one household $2,000 net and their neighbour $12,000
  2. In an electrically heated home, BC Hydro pays $4,000 for a system covering 100% of the heating load at −5 °C, or $1,500 for one covering at least half. Sizing decides which cheque arrives, so make the contractor spell out which one they're designing for
  3. Register before you install. CleanBC's income-qualified approval and the registered-contractor requirement are pre-conditions, not paperwork you can backfill afterward
  4. Book in the shoulder season. April and September are the quiet weeks between the heating panic and the cooling panic, and quotes reflect it
  5. Don't buy more zones than you'll run. A head in a spare bedroom that stays shut adds $2,000–3,500 and heats nobody
  6. Stop hunting for the FortisBC dual-fuel rebate: it closed on December 18, 2025, and nothing has replaced it

  5. Who submits the rebate applications, and what's the timeline on my money?
  6. Is the old furnace staying as backup heat, and if it comes out, who pulls the gas permit?

While the Plumber Is There

Call-out time is a big share of any bill — if one of these applies to your home, pricing it in the same visit usually beats a separate appointment.

Furnace Replacement

The real decision for most gas-heated BC homes is heat pump versus another furnace. Price both before the old furnace picks for you on a January morning.

Air Conditioner Installation

A heat pump is an air conditioner that also runs in reverse. If cooling is what's actually driving this, compare the two prices — sometimes AC-only wins, and sometimes the rebate flips it completely.

Hot Water Tank Replacement

Same panel, same rebate programs, same mechanical room. If the tank is over ten, getting both assessed in one visit saves a second call-out and a second electrical review.
